Statement on Budget Estimate

AUSTIN — State Sen. Bob Deuell (R – Greenville) today released the following statement on the state's biennial budget estimate:

"Mark Twain once said, 'I have known a great many troubles, but most of them never happened.'

"Despite a large projected budget shortfall, the process of writing the 2012-2013 budget is just beginning and I anticipate the deficit narrowing and the comptroller's revenue estimate increasing in the coming months. Although I do not oppose using a portion of the Rainy Day Fund, I believe our primary responsibility should be responsible budget cuts and finding cost-saving measures related to health and human services and education."

"We should not be looking at tax increases as a way to increase revenue or solve our budget problems. While there is a place for government to help some people without adequate resources, this may be the ideal time for churches and other service organizations to step forward"
