Senator Uresti visits a devastated Eagle Pass following deadly storms
Joins Gov. Perry, State Rep. King in a tour of damaged area
AUSTIN, TX -- Senator Carlos Uresti will make an emergency visit to Eagle Pass, Texas today, following devastating storms that struck the area last night.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Eagle Pass during this tragedy. I have made many visits to this wonderful community, and I feel a deep connection to my constituents there. As soon as I heard about this storm, I made plans to be with them during this difficult time.
"Shortly after I learned of the storm damage last night from Maverick County Judge Jose "Pepe" Aranda, I contacted Governor Perry and Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst to ensure that all possible emergency relief efforts were underway. I am deeply grateful to both leaders for their swift support of the people of Maverick County, and look forward to working together to ensure that assistance to the area continues beyond immediate emergency relief," Uresti said.
Damage in the Eagle Pass/Maverick County is extensive. Six deaths are confirmed, and more than 70 individuals were sent to the local hospital for care. Multiple homes, an elementary school, and the area's sewerage treatment plant were damaged or destroyed.
Senator Uresti was forced to leave the Capitol during Wednesday's legislative session to travel to Eagle Pass, which lies in his Senate District 19.
"It's impossible to be in two places at once, and today I had to be with the people of Eagle Pass as they deal with this disaster," Uresti said.
Uresti urged Texans to consider donations to the American Red Cross -- San Antonio Area Chapter, which is accepting donations for Eagle Pass tornado relief efforts. Checks should be made out to: "American Red Cross--San Antonio Area Chapter" with a note in the memo line reading "Eagle Pass tornado victims", and sent to the address below.
