Sunset Advisory Commission Recognized
Award Covers Time Under Senator Hegar's Leadership

Senator Hegar is proud to share news that the Texas' Sunset Advisory Commission has been awarded the National Conference of State Legislatures' 2012 Excellence in Evaluation Award. The award recognizes Sunset's work during 2008-2011, a time at which many of Texas' most important state agencies were reviewed under Senator Hegar's service as Vice-Chair (2008-09) and Chair (2010-11).

"I am extremely proud of the work accomplished by the Sunset Commission throughout my 4-year tenure," said Senator Hegar. "Texans need to know that their tax dollars support state agencies that operate efficiently and in a transparent fashion that holds them accountable. The Sunset staff does an excellent job of formulating recommendations to ensure our state agencies efficiently perform their charge, and it was an honor to provide the legislative leadership to make their reforms law. This award is well deserved and I congratulate the Sunset team."

Texas' Sunset Advisory Commission beat out seven other states to win this year's award, which recognizes the substantial body of work produced by Sunset Commission staff in recent years that has had clear positive impacts on government in Texas. From 2008 to 2011, Sunset Commission staff produced 41 reports that included almost 600 recommendations to repair, improve, or eliminate agency operations. Sunset's work under Senator Hegar's Chairmanship will result in a two-year savings and revenue gain to the state of about $162 million.

"Senator Hegar's leadership over the last four years certainly had a big impact on our winning the award. Sunset staff works diligently to deliver recommendations to improve state agencies, but without support from the elected leaders that make up the Commission to pass the bills, we'd have no chance at the award, so I certainly thank Senator Hegar and all the Commission members as I commend and congratulate the Sunset team on this national recognition," said Sunset Advisory Commission Executive Director Ken Levine.

The Sunset Advisory Commission is estimated to have had a positive fiscal impact to the state of over $945 million from 1982 to 2011.

Senator Hegar served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and now represents Senate District 18 in the Texas Senate. He is a sixth generation Texan, and earns a living farming land that has been in his family since the mid 1800's. He currently resides in Katy, Texas with his wife Dara, and their three children, Claire, Julia, and Jonah.
