Senator Glenn Hegar Honored by the Texas Municipal Police Association
Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission Presented with "Legislative Excellence Award"
Austin, Texas — The Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA) today presented Senator Glenn Hegar with the TMPA “Legislative Excellence Award” in recognition of his strong and consistent support for Texas' law enforcement officers during the 81st Legislative Session.
"Texas’ men and women in law enforcement have a strong ally in Senator Glenn Hegar and he is the classic example of a peace officer’s legislator. Senator Hegar continued his strong friendship of Texas law enforcement during the last legislative session by ensuring that state tax dollars intended for public safety will not be diverted for unintended purposes. Because of the efforts of Senator Glenn Hegar, tax dollars appropriated by the legislature for law enforcement training will be spent for exactly that—training local cops so they can better protect Texas families," said Tom Gaylor of TMPA.
During the last legislative session, Senator Hegar fought to ensure that Texas peace officers have the tools necessary to protect themselves as they perform their oftentimes dangerous work protecting Texas families and property. Senator Hegar was successful in preventing waste of our tax dollars by passing a state law that requires all recipients of state law enforcement training dollars to detail how those funds are being spent. A recent audit revealed that significant waste and misuse of training dollars for officer education had occurred and Senator Hegar’s legislation will put a stop to this dishonest and harmful practice.
"It is with great appreciation that I accept TMPA’s “Legislative Excellence Award” today. The men and women of Texas law enforcement deserve the highest appreciation for their selfless dedication and hard work in keeping Texans safe. I want to thank the Texas Municipal Police Association for their work in promoting professionalism in law enforcement and its efforts to enhance public safety. I am so proud to have received this honor and to know that I have earned the support and admiration of our state’s finest and bravest,” Senator Hegar said.
Senator Hegar is a member of the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, through which the majority of proposed public safety laws must pass. Before coming to the Texas Senate, Senator Hegar was a member of the Texas House of Representatives and served on the House Law Enforcement Committee from 2003 to 2006. His experience in both legislative chambers and his familiarity with issues affecting public safety have earned him the reputation of being one of a handful of state lawmakers universally recognized by the law enforcement community as potent and unwavering allies. The “Legislative Excellence Award” is the second honor given to Senator Hegar by the TMPA. Last session, the law enforcement group presented Hegar with their “Badge of Honor,” TMPA's most prestigious award and an honor granted only in cases of extraordinary achievement.
Senator Hegar represents Senate District 18 in the Texas Senate, an area that traces an east-west line from the outskirts of Houston to the outskirts of Austin and extends straight south from those points to the coast. The district encompasses 19 counties and is home to almost eight hundred thousand Texans. In addition to serving on the Senate Criminal Justice Committee, Hegar serves as Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, an arm of the legislature created in 1977 to identify and eliminate waste, duplication, and inefficiency in state agencies. The Commission is estimated to have saved the state over $783 million from 1982 to 2009.
Senator Hegar served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and now represents Senate District 18 in the Texas Senate. Senate District 18 contains over one-third of the Texas coastline. He is a sixth generation Texan, and earns a living farming rice and corn on land that has been in his family since the mid 1800's. He currently resides in Katy, Texas with his wife Dara, and their three children, Claire, Julia, and Jonah.
