Senator Hegar Announces Ken Levine as Interim Director of Sunset
Senator Glenn Hegar, the newly appointed Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, announced today the appointment of Ken Levine as Interim Director of the commission.
In his letter to fellow Sunset members, Hegar said, "As you know, Joey Longley has retired as Director of the Sunset Advisory Commission after many years of state service. After consultation with both Lt. Governor Dewhurst and Speaker Straus, I am appointing Ken Levine as Interim Director of the Sunset Advisory Commission."
Ken Levine has served the Commission for 28 years, 14 of those as Deputy Director. Starting at the Sunset Commission as a policy analyst in 1981, Ken worked his way up, taking on roles of increasing responsibility as a project manager, senior analyst, and assistant and deputy director. In these roles, he has worked on, managed, or supervised reviews covering nearly every facet of state government.
Senator Hegar added, "I believe Ken's promotion to Interim Director is appropriate and will provide for a seamless transition. It offers the additional benefit of allowing us to immediately begin work on the many reviews in front of us. Ken's knowledge and leadership on Sunset issues is unmatched and I know that Ken, and the entire Sunset staff, will maintain the level of excellence we have come to expect from the Commission."
"I also want to take this opportunity to thank Joey Longley for his many years of service to the State of Texas and to congratulate him on his new position," Senator Hegar continued, "The Texas Sunset Advisory Commission is nationally recognized as a model for reworking state agencies to achieve true advances in government efficiency and effectiveness. This well deserved national recognition is due in large part to the leadership, solid work ethic, bold decision making, and expertise provided by Joey Longley. I want to congratulate him on his new opportunities, but most importantly, thank him for his friendship and, too, for his steadfast commitment to our beloved State of Texas. Joey's straightforward and honest leadership as Director of the Sunset Advisory Commission has truly made Texas a better place for hardworking Texas taxpayers, and I am confident that his legacy will only grow as he takes on the challenges ahead."
Ken Levine will begin his new role as Interim Director, immediately, assuming the duties and responsibilities of directing the Sunset Commission as they begin work on the 2011 review cycle.
Senator Hegar served two terms in the Texas House of Representatives and now represents Senate District 18 in the Texas Senate. Senate District 18 is made up of nineteen counties and spans over 16,000 square miles. He is a sixth generation Texan, and earns a living farming rice and corn on land that has been in his family since the mid 1800's. He currently resides in Katy, Texas with his wife Dara, and their three children, Claire, Julia, and Jonah.
