As we approach the end of 2013, I want to take a moment to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas, happy holiday, and a Happy New Year. As I reflect over the last year, I am reminded of the many blessings in my life, most importantly, my family and friends. I always look forward to this time of the year when I can celebrate the holidays with loved ones. One of our favorite things to do is take in some of the many holiday events in the Dallas area. Due to the icy weather over the weekend of December 6-8, many events were rescheduled for the upcoming week and weekend. Bundle up and enjoy one of these fun events with your family:
Carrollton Gingerbread House Contest, Display, and Auction
Coppell Lighted Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony
Farmers Branch Christmas Tour of Lights
Garland Christmas on the Square
Irving Tree Lighting Ceremony and Holiday Lights in Centennial Park
To view a list of other holiday events, visit your city hall website or check out the Dallas Morning News website, where you can search for upcoming holiday events by city, type of event, and date. Additionally, the Dallas Convention and Visitors Bureau is keeping a calendar of upcoming events.
This would also be a wonderful time to explore some of the state's historic county courthouses. Many towns, with the help of the Texas Historical Commission's Architecture Division, have decorated their iconic courthouses with lights and other holiday displays. Several of these courthouses have been recently restored to their original luster through the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
I am grateful to have had the opportunity to represent the residents of Senate District 16 during the 83rd Legislature and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to work for you in 2014.
Wishing you and yours a joyful holiday season -
State Senator - District 16

- Next week I am excited to host the Annual Meeting of the Office of the Public Utility Counsel (OPUC). Not to be confused with the Public Utility Commission (PUC), OPUC is the state agency that represents consumer interests for homeowner, renter and small business utility ratepayers in electric, telephone and water/wastewater proceedings before appropriate regulator entities. This public meeting is an opportunity for you to learn more about shopping for retail electric providers, learn about local payment assistance programs, and ask any other pertinent questions. OPUC also encourages you to bring your electric bill if you would like to review it with OPUC staff. The event will be held in Coppell on December 18 at the William T. Cozby Library from 5:00-6:30 PM.
