UPCOMING PRESS CONFERENCE: TEXAS SENATOR JOHN CARONA WILL UNVEIL HIS PLAN FOR GANG FREE ZONES ACCOMPANIED BY DALLAS COUNTY DISTRICT ATTORNEY CRAIG WATKINS AND MEMBERS OF THE SENATE

Austin, Texas - Dallas County District Attorney Craig Watkins, a number of law enforcement representatives and Members of the Texas Senate will join Texas State Senator John Carona, Chairman of the Texas Senate Committee on Transportation and Homeland Security, for a major policy announcement regarding his anti-gang legislation at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 3, 2009, in the Senate Press Conference Room, 2E.9 of the Texas State Capitol in Austin, TX.

Senator Carona recognizes the dangerous threat that gangs pose to Texas communities, especially in areas that are frequented by youth. To combat this threat, law enforcement and criminal prosecutors need additional tools to deter gangs' illegal activities. On March 3rd Senator Carona will file legislation, modeled after the successful Drug Free Zones concept, that will create designated areas within which the punishments for criminal gang activity will be increased. These areas include schools, playgrounds, and universities, as well as other popular areas for young people. This "Gang Free Zones" legislation will be an essential part of our efforts to combat gang-related crime in our state.

Texas can and should take steps that will lead the nation in anti-gang efforts. This press conference will provide us the opportunity to discuss one of these very important steps, Senator Carona's Gang Free Zones legislation.
