Senator Watson's Statement on the State of the State
AUSTIN — Governor Perry's State of the State speech recognized that many of his positions over the last decade have created challenges confronting all Texans. Action is long overdue to bolster our infrastructure, make our universities more affordable, improve our schools, propel our clean energy industry, and make the state budget honest and the tax system fair.
I'm discouraged that so many of the issues facing middle-class Texans received so little of the Governor's attention today. For example, he ignored the fact that Texas has the highest percentage of uninsured children in the nation, that Texans must pay some of the highest insurance rates in the country, and that few homeowners have realized the property tax savings that were promised to them. The economic difficulties confronting the state are just as serious for everyday Texans as they are for the corporations that were the focus of many of the Governor's remarks. And these working Texans must not be casualties of the needlessly divisive battles that were prominent in his speech.
I look forward to working with Governor Perry to meet the needs of everyday Texans, to build a foundation for our children's prosperity, and to embrace the future and not fight it.
