Response to State of the State Address

Austin -- "Governor Bush is right in saying the outlook for Texas is bright. Texas streets are safer, our children's test scores are up and, for the first time in decades, we have the resources to tackle the serious problems limiting our future. We must maximize this opportunity to make a downpayment on our children's future. To build a better Texas in the 21st Century, we must make wise investment decisions, and not those that fritter away long-term priorities for short-term gain.

"Strengthening education is the top priority of Texas parents. To do that, we must ensure competitive pay for Texas teachers, so that our schools can recruit and keep the best teachers in the classroom. We must provide HOPE Scholarships and expand access to college to ensure that every child has the education they need to succeed in the 21st Century. We must ensure every child has access to quality health, dental and child care. And we must ensure that our children are protected from crime and drugs. This session, we have the opportunity to make tremendous progress toward reaching these priorities.

"A small tax cut is important and will be on the agenda, but it is not as important as building a brighter future for our children. We can afford to cut taxes, or we can afford to make a solid investment in our children's future. I hope we can afford to do both. Whichever path the legislature chooses, we must make those choices that create a better Texas for all in the 21st Century."
