Statement of Senator Rodney Ellis on Electric Deregulation Legislation

Austin -- "Electric deregulation is one of the top priorities of the 76th Legislature. There are many advantages to deregulation, not the least of which is the potential for lower rates. I am pleased to be a cosponsor of the legislation. We need to make sure deregulation is done right.

"Senator Sibley, Senator Armbrister and the members of the committee deserve credit for getting the ball rolling on this issue. They have brought together many competing interests to find a consensus and have charted a clear course for us to follow. They have learned from the mistakes of other states and worked to correct them. This legislation is a solid first step in the effort to move Texas into the 21st Century, and I look forward to working along side them to make electric deregulation work for all Texans.

"As a supporter of this legislation, there are, however, concerns that I would like to see addressed more fully. For instance, are residential consumers adequately protected? Will an elderly woman in downtown Houston have her fan shut off in the dog days of summer because of a bad business decision made in Amarillo? I feel these are the types of questions that need to be answered as we move forward. This is an issue that will affect every Texan, so we must make sure we have a strong safety net in place.

"Today marks a solid first step in the effort to deregulate our electric industry. Now we must make sure all Texans benefit from any change to the system. It is time for us to roll up our sleeves, work together and finish the job."
