Senator Ellis Ready to Kick Off 76th Legislative Session
Expanding access to education, judicial reform are top Ellis priorities

(Austin) -- Texas State Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) and his Senate and House colleagues officially kicked off the 76th Legislature with swearing-in ceremonies today at the Capitol. This is Senator Ellis' fifth full legislative session.

"Thanks to our strong economy and sound fiscal management, we have an opportunity this session to build a brighter future for our children. The budget surplus, tobacco settlement funds, and Children's Health Insurance Program can be a down payment on our children's future.

"I look forward to working with my colleagues in the House and Senate, Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry and Governor George W. Bush to improve our public schools, expand access to quality, affordable health and child care and provide our school kids the opportunity to go to college and get the education they need to succeed in the 21st Century.

"My top priorities include creating HOPE Scholarships for hard working high school students to get a college education, reforming the way we elect our judges, expanding access to child care and insurance, and keeping our children safe from guns, drugs and violence."

The 76th Legislative Session begins today and will conclude on May 31st.
