AUSTIN -- The 1998 class of participants in the Texas Legislative Internship Program met with Senator Ellis and Mayor Lee Brown in Houston as they begin their semester of service in the offices of members of the Texas Legislature, County Commissioner El Franco Lee, and Houston City Councilman Carroll G. Robinson. Ten interns have been placed in internships in legislative offices in Austin and Houston.

"The Texas Legislative Internship Program gives young Texas students an opportunity to get hands-on experience in the legislative process," said Senator Ellis. "By working with Texas leaders today, we are helping our students become the leaders of tomorrow."

The internship program, sponsored by the Mickey Leland Center at Texas Southern University, was initiated in 1990 to provide opportunities for students at designated universities to serve as interns in the Texas Legislature and various state and local agencies. To date, nearly 100 undergraduate and graduate students interested in the political process have completed the program, receiving academic credit for the one-semester professional internship.

"The internship program was inspired by my friend, the late Congressman Mickey Leland," said Senator Ellis. "Our goal is to encourage young people interested in public and humanitarian service to make a contribution to their communities."
