Senator Rodney Ellis Announces UT/HISD/Bank of America College Prep Enrichment Partnership for Top 10% High School Seniors

(HOUSTON, TX) -- Senator Rodney Ellis today will announce a college preparatory partnership between the University of Texas at Austin, Houston Independent School District, and Bank of America to prepare top 10% high school seniors for college. The Texas Longhorn PREP program supports a new law, supported by Senator Ellis, to automatically admit seniors in the top 10% of their own high school class to the public university or college of their choice.

"This enrichment program will help the cream of the crop in every high school in every neighborhood to succeed in college," Senator Ellis said.

Texas Longhorn PREP will provide motivation, academic preparation, and counseling on college entrance requirements and scholarships. This Spring UT professors will work in Houston directly with students to enhance their skills. Professors will also assist teachers in implementing a college prep curriculum to enhance the overall classroom environment. During the Summer, students will go to UT-Austin and attend classes in preparation for the beginning of the school year in the Fall.

"I hope that all of the nearly 1,000 top 10% graduating seniors in HISD take advantage of automatic admission to the college of their choice," Senator Ellis said.

"I applaud this educational partnership between a university, a public school system, and a corporation," Senator Ellis said. "By working together, we can ensure that our students have an equal opportunity to succeed in college."

Tonight at 6:00 p.m., Senator Ellis will address top 10 percent students from participating schools and their parents at a reception at the HISD Administration Building.
