Sen. Ellis Statement on Ken Anderson Plea Deal
(Austin, Texas) — Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), who attended today's court proceedings in Williamson County, released the following statement regarding former Williamson County District Attorney Ken Anderson's plea deal for his role in the wrongful conviction of Michael Morton. Morton was exonerated by DNA evidence in 2011 after serving nearly 25 years for his wife's murder:
"I hope this provides some measure of closure for Michael Morton," said Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston). "There's no way to make up for the nearly 25 years he wrongfully spent in prison, but the system acknowledging that a mistake was made is a step in the right direction."
"Hopefully, this will serve as a reminder that those entrusted with the power to enforce the law also have a heightened duty to follow it. That's the only we can create a reliable and effective criminal justice system that protects the innocent, holds the guilty accountable, and is instilled with fairness and integrity."
