Senator Ellis responds to State's Lawsuit Over Harmful Voter ID Law
(Austin, TX)—The Texas Attorney General filed a lawsuit in federal court today to fast-track the enforcement of the state's Voter ID law. The law is currently under review by the U.S. Department of Justice. Senator Ellis (D-Houston) issues the following statement:
"Texas has a long and sad history of making it difficult for people to vote, which is why changes to our elections require federal oversight. History now judges those men and women in a harsh light. It's therefore essential that any change to our elections, especially one that will disproportionately affect minority and poor voters, receive the appropriate review from the Department of Justice. I believe any litigation to speed up that decision will only result in its quicker rejection."
