Senator Rodney Ellis Responds to Stay of Execution for Henry "Hank" Skinner
"I applaud the Supreme Court for having the courage and judgment to do what the leaders of Texas would not. Regardless of where one stands on the death penalty, I hope we can all agree that we should weigh all the available evidence to determine if someone is guilty or innocent before we administer the ultimate punishment. When we fail to do so, we undermine faith in our legal process and the effectiveness of our justice system. In the case of Mr. Skinner, there are just too many questions left unanswered. DNA testing could resolve the doubts about Mr. Skinner's guilt, but the State has refused to allow evidence to be tested for ten years. To leave available DNA evidence untested would be a complete miscarriage of justice," said State Senator Rodney Ellis.
