Ellis: Texas Must Stop Fossilized Thinking on Climate Change
Texas has opportunity to lead the way in new green economy, but leadership required
(Austin, Texas) — Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) released the following statement today in reaction to criticism of federal efforts to combat the impact of climate change.
"There are literally millions of jobs that will be created for renewable energy, advanced batteries, next generation bio-fuels, and energy efficiency, and unfortunately Texas is missing out. Doomsday rhetoric of the supposed negative effects of addressing climate change ignores the tremendous opportunities available for Texas, and sends the wrong signal to our entrepreneurs. Texas is blessed with more renewable energy resources like wind and solar power than virtually every other state, and our energy know-how is unrivaled. We could use this to our advantage but tragically, due to a lack of leadership, we're not.
"Texas became rich from fossil fuels, but we could easily lose our position as an energy leader because of fossilized thinking. We could create far more wealth and jobs from wind and solar energy, but only we aggressively pursue clean energy opportunities. Unfortunately, we missed a golden opportunity this session one the governor should address if he calls a special session.
"It's time for Texas to move beyond fossilized thinking and move to a clean energy future. We can fight climate change and create jobs at the same time-- with the right leadership."
