Senator Ellis Statement on Arrest Warrant for Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir

Austin, Texas — Senator Rodney Ellis today released the following statement regarding the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court for Sudanese President Bashir for war crimes in Darfur:

“Last session, the Texas Legislature passed and the Governor signed the Sudan Divestment Act. Texas joined many other states in putting economic pressure on the genocidal regime in Sudan. Today, the International Criminal Court issued it’s first ever arrest warrant for crimes against humanity of a sitting head of state, but it will be difficult to arrest him as long as his regime has the economic ability to survive.

“That’s why it’s so important that Texas not rest on its laurels and that we pass SB 121, which would prohibit the state from contracting with any business that supports President Bashir’s regime, and SB 602 which would extend divestment from the state’s retirement systems to the University of Texas Investment Management Company. We need to keep the pressure on the regime and do our part in order to end the genocide in Darfur.
