Senator Ellis Responds to NY Shooting Verdict
Four NYPD Officers Acquitted on all Charges in Shooting of Unarmed African Immigrant

"Like most Americans, I am shocked and outraged by the verdict handed down in New York. No one wants to make race an issue, but it is unmistakable in this case. The facts are clear: an unarmed African male is shot at 41 times by four white officers and nothing happens."

"In the minds of many Americans, these four officers just got away with murder. Forty one shots! How many bullets must be fired at an unarmed man before it is considered a crime? Eighty? One hundred? Must the officers stop and reload and fire again before the shooting is ruled unjustifiable? I hope the federal authorities will now examine whether justice has been served in this case and take up the charge for the Diallo family.

"We must do more to promote understanding and healing between persons of color and all Americans. Unfortunately, verdicts like this and Rodney King send a message to African Americans that justice is not color blind. We cannot and must not sit quietly when injustice slaps us in the face."
