SENATOR NELSON, PANEL EXAMINE EDUCATION FUNDING
AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today took part in the second hearing of the Joint Interim Committee to Study the Public School Finance System. The newly created panel will make education funding recommendations to the next Legislature.
The committee, which consists of 11 State Senators and 11 State Representatives, heard testimony on education funding models from other states and countries.
"Education is the key to the future of our state, and we have a responsibility to ensure that every child in Texas has access to a quality education," Senator Nelson said. "Today we heard outstanding testimony about education models from around the world, which will help us work to prepare our students for a global economy."
Senator Nelson has an extensive background in education. Before serving two terms on the State Board of Education, she taught sixth grade in Tarrant County. She wrote the state law dedicating lottery proceeds to education; banned the use of minimum grade policies; returned physical activity to the school day in Texas elementary schools; and has championed legislation to improve the health of students.
