HOUSE APPROVES PROTECTION FOR SENIORS

AUSTIN -- The Texas House of Representatives today approved SB 199 by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, adding to the list of crimes that disqualify individuals from working with the elderly. It now returns to the Senate for consideration of the House amendments before being sent to the governor's desk.

"During the interim it was brought to my attention that even though we are conducting background checks, we are still allowing individuals who have committed serious crimes work with our seniors," said Senator Nelson, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services. "This bill will protect our elderly from those who cause them harm."

SB 199 amends Section 250.006 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by adding the following convictions as reasons barring employment as an attendant:
