SENATE APPROVES TRUTH IN TOLLING, BATTERY PREVENTION BILLS
AUSTIN -- The Texas Senate today approved two pieces of legislation by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, one enacting truth-in-tolling (SB 995) and another ensuring the courts take a comprehensive approach to battery intervention (SB 44).
"If the Department of Transportation wants to privatize a toll road for the next 50 years, the public deserves to read the fine print," Senator Nelson said, referring to SB 995, which requires toll authorities to publish in local newspapers financial details of any toll contract once a bid is awarded. Those details must include the total amount of debt, a description of how the debt will be repaid, how toll rates will be determined and whether the road will continue to be tolled once the debt has been repaid.
SB 44 creates an accreditation process for Battery Intervention & Prevention Programs, which are often mandated by courts in cases of family violence. "When we talk about domestic violence, we often refer to breaking the cycle of abuse because so often it is passed down from generation to generation. To truly break that cycle, we need more than anger management. We need a comprehensive program that will prevent recidivism," Senator Nelson said.
Nelson represents District 12, which includes several communities in Tarrant
and Denton counties.
