AUSTIN -- Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, was honored today with a Texas Alzheimer's Leadership and Public Service Award by the Alzheimer's Association, Capitol of Texas chapter.

"We are proud to present Senator Nelson with the Texas Alzheimer's Leadership and Public Service Award for her tireless efforts last session to secure the first state funding for Alzheimer's research in Texas history. Senator Nelson's willingness to share her own mother's struggle with Alzheimer's has helped raised public awareness of the need to support cutting edge research in our state that can lead to breakthroughs in better diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's disease," said Debbie Hanna, President, Alzheimer's Association, Capital of Texas Chapter.

Senator Nelson offered a budget rider last session to provide the state's first appropriation for Alzheimer's research. Her mother, Edna Gray, died in 2001 after a long battle with Alzheimer's.

"This award is especially meaningful to me because Alzheimer's affected our family in a very personal way. Unless you have experienced it, you cannot truly understand the toll this disease takes on loved ones, and it is important that we continue promoting research and helping caregivers cope," Senator Nelson said.

In her mother's obituary, Senator Nelson was quoted as saying: "My mother survived the Great Depression and World War II and still managed to build a strong 61-year marriage and succeed in the toughest job in the world: raising children and teaching them how to be solid citizens and to make their own way in the world."

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, which includes portions of Tarrant and Denton counties.
