SENATOR NELSON ANNOUNCES SAFE COMPETITION ACT
GRAPEVINE -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, today announced her intent to file legislation requiring that automated external defibrillators, or AEDs, be available at every public high school event in Texas beginning in fall 2007.
"In a state known for hard-hitting football and fierce competition at every level, having an AED on hand could mean the difference between life or death. This legislation will protect our student athletes, our bands, our cheerleaders and everyone who follows high school sports in Texas," Senator Nelson said.
Supporting Senator Nelson's legislation at a press conference today in Dallas was the team physician for the Dallas Mavericks, Dr. T.O. Souryal, and professional athletes Sean Bradley, Spud Webb, Tim Brown, Lee Roy Jordan, Darren Woodsen, all members of the Texas Sports Medicine Foundation. TSFM announced that it would donate an AED to any requesting high school that is economically disadvantaged.
