SENATOR NELSON SETS HEARING FOR PROTECTIVE SERVICES REFORM
AUSTIN -- Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, today announced the first Senate hearing on Senate Bill 6, the omnibus protective services reform bill she filed in response to problems in the state's child and adult protective services. The hearing is set for 9 a.m. Thursday in the Senate Chamber.
"If ever there were an issue worthy of being declared an emergency, this is it," Senator Nelson, Chairman of the Senate Health & Human Services Committee, said. "When lives are in danger, we expect our watchdog agencies to respond quickly to this ongoing crisis. As legislators we need to be held to the same standard, which is why it is so important that we move quickly to pass these reforms."
The governor has declared protective services reform an emergency issue, which means that it is eligible to become law within the first 60 days of the session, which began Jan. 11. Thursday's hearing will include invited testimony only. Hearings including public testimony will extend over the next two weeks. Those hearing dates and times will be posted online at the Texas Senate's homepage at www.senate.state.tx.us.
Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, represents District 12, which includes parts of Tarrant and Denton counties.
