Workers' Comp Reforms Recommended
AUSTIN -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, today announced her support for major reform to the state's workers compensation system in the upcoming legislative session.
"The objective is to ensure that Texas workers get well as quickly as possible so that they can return to work. It is clear that the current system is not meeting that objective to the satisfaction of injured workers, employers, insurance carriers or health care providers," Senator Nelson said. "We need to bring this niche of our health care industry into the new millennium."
Senator Nelson serves as Chairman of the Health & Human Services Committee and Vice Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission, which today recommended to the legislature that the functions of the workers' compensation system be transferred to the Texas Department of Insurance and that much of the workers' compensation duties be placed under a new Office of Employee Assistance.
The Commission recommended a set of provisions designed to create a regulatory environment of workers' compensation insurance that is similar to the traditional health care environment. Additionally, the Commission focused on recommendations designed to reduce fraud and abuse.

Senator Jane Nelson represents District 12, which includes part of Tarrant and Denton counties.
