SENATOR NELSON: LET OLD GLORY FLY HIGH
GRAPEVINE - State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, announced today that she intends to file legislation in the next legislative session giving Texans the right to display Old Glory at their homes.
The announcement comes after incidents in North Texas in which a homeowners' association has prohibited residents from displaying the United States flag, the most recent being a case in Euless.
"I do not understand how anyone could be offended by a United States flag being flown by their next door neighbor, unless it was unusually large or placed in an intrusive location," Senator Nelson said. "Neighborhood groups play an important role in our community, and they should have some say over size and location. But I think every homeowner should be allowed to display the Stars & Stripes."
Senator Nelson is currently researching the laws in other states, including California and Arizona, where state legislatures have intervened under similar circumstances.
The Legislature is scheduled to meet in regular session in January 2005. Pre-filing of legislation begins in November.
Senator Nelson represents District 12, which includes parts of Tarrant and Denton counties.
