SENATOR NELSON TO LEAD INTERIM REVIEW OF STATE HEALTH CARE POLICY

AUSTIN - Amid the state's ongoing effort to provide much-needed services in the face of rising health care costs, the Senate Health and Human Services Committee has been asked to broadly re-examine several state services and look for ways to improve efficiency and quality of care.

"We will continue to provide services that protect our seniors, children and individuals who are totally dependent on the government for their health and well being, even in the face of rising health care costs. But we have a responsibility to be sensitive to the reality of the state budget, a third of which is devoted to health and human services," said Committee Chairman Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville. "This Committee will closely monitor the restructuring of state services and will continue to look for ways to improve both care and efficiency."

The Committee's list of interim charges were handed down yesterday by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst, who also re-appointed Senator Nelson to the Sunset Advisory Commission, the Workman's Compensation Reform Committee and the Senate Committees on Finance, State Affairs and International Relations & Trade.

The Texas Constitution calls for the legislature to meet for 140 days every odd-numbered year. The off year is called the interim period, which provides an opportunity for legislators to hear public testimony on a wide range of issues.
