SENATOR NELSON'S BILL TO PROTECT SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS ADVANCES
AUSTIN -- The Senate Committee on Business & Commerce today unanimously approved SB 611 by Senator Nelson, prohibiting the printing of social security numbers on identification cards used by industry. The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
"As we discovered recently with the theft of Social Security numbers from the UT database, it is already too easy for identity thieves to access this information without printing it on a card. This is an invasion of privacy that unnecessarily opens up Texans to potentially devastating financial harm," Senator Nelson said.
SB 611 prevents health insurers or any other entity that uses an identification card from printing the consumer's Social Security number on the card and subjects violators to a fine up to $500. If approved by the Legislature and signed into law, the new law will take effect January 1, 2004. Health insurers that have already issued 2004 cards must comply with renewals after January 1, 2005.
Senator Jane Nelson represents District 12, which includes the growing suburban communities of Denton and Tarrant counties and parts of the city of Fort Worth. Her email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
