SENATOR NELSON RE-FILES BILL TO BAN HUMAN CLONING

AUSTIN -- Spurred on by headlines of a company's claim to have created the world's first cloned human baby, Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, has launched her second attempt to outlaw human cloning in Texas.

Today she filed Senate Bill 156, which mirrors her legislation that passed the Senate last session but did not pass the House. The bill:

"I get a pit in my stomach every time I think about the unspeakable horrors that must have occurred in the cloning of this child, especially considering that it takes about 100 attempts for scientists to get it right in cloning an animal. There is no punishment on earth strong enough for what these people have done ... if in fact their claims are true," Senator Nelson said. "I am a strong supporter of medical research, but we simply cannot allow this type of diabolical experimentation to occur in Texas. Civil penalties are not enough. Today I re-filed a bill that establishes severe civil and criminal penalties for anyone who engages in human cloning. This is the same legislation we passed in the Senate last session, and I am confident that we will get it through the House this time."

Senator Jane Nelson is the Senator-elect representing District 12, which includes the growing suburban communities of Denton and Tarrant counties and parts of the city of Fort Worth.
