BILL TO IMPROVE ACCESS TO CANCER TREATMENT CLEARS SENATE

AUSTIN - Senate Bill 532, authored by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, to improve access to early detection and treatment for women with breast or cervical cancer, was approved by the Texas Senate today and now heads to the House for consideration.

"Through early detection and treatment we know we can significantly reduce mortality rates from breast and cervical cancer. We also know that by investing in early treatment we can save health care dollars in the long-term by delaying or avoiding altogether the need for acute care in the latter stages of the disease. This legislation will go a long way in our fight against breast cancer and cervical cancer in Texas," Senator Nelson said.

Specifically, the bill authorizes the Texas Department of Health to provide treatment for all patients eligible for assistance under the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000.

It is estimated that this effort could help provide assistance to more than 200 Medicaid-eligible women across the state. The initial fiscal impact to the state is estimated at $1.1 million over the biennium - an investment required by the federal government in order for Texas to receive matching funds in the amount of nearly $3 million.

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties.
