SENATOR NELSON RECOGNIZED FOR TAX RELIEF EFFORTS

AUSTIN -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has been recognized with a Friend of the Taxpayer Award from Texas Citizens For A Sound Economy (TCSE). The award was presented during a special ceremony Tuesday night in Denton.

TCSE presents this award annually to lawmakers who support the principles of less government, lower taxes and fewer regulations.

"A commitment to empowering their constituents by relieving them of burdensome taxation makes these Texas legislators stand out among their peers. They examine every issue which comes before them to determine its impact on the taxpayers in their districts," Tina Peyton, area field director for TCSE, said. "Through their dedication to reducing the size and scope of government, these members enable their constituents to better make the decisions that affect their own lives, rather than have government make decisions for them."

TCSE Director Peggy Venable said, "We need more legislators like these members. Their commitment to the taxpayer is a great example of how legislators can better serve their constituents."

During this past legislative session and throughout her career as a public servant, Senator Nelson has been a strong proponent of property tax relief. As member of the conference committee that drafted the state education budget, she helped deliver a record $1.3 billion in property tax cuts. She also co-authored a new law exempting from the state franchise tax small businesses that earn less than $100,000 a year.

"Taxes are always a top concern of the families in our community. I know that during this period of rapid growth, it is sometimes difficult for taxpayers to understand the difference between the growth in our service needs, the growth in our tax base and the actual growth in our government spending," Senator Nelson said. "Texas Citizens For A Sound Economy helps taxpayers understand how their money is really being spent. I value the public service this organization provides, and I will treasure this award always."

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties.
