The 77th Senate at a Glance

The Texas Senate will convene for the 77th Legislative Session at 12 noon Tuesday, January 9, 2001, in the Senate Chamber, at the Capitol in Austin.

The Senate of the 77th Legislature is composed of 16 Republicans and 15 Democrats. The 31 members, listed by district number, are:

Each senator serves a four year term. Half of the Senate membership is elected every two years. A senator must be at least 26 years of age, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Texas for five years prior to election, and a resident of the district from which elected one year prior to election.

The presiding officer of the Senate is Lieutenant Governor Rick Perry.
