Senator Van de Putte applauds passage of nondiscrimination ordinance
(San Antonio) — Today, the San Antonio City Council passed nondiscrimination ordinances expanding protections against bias based on sexual orientation and on veteran status. State Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio (District 26), issued the following statement in response:
"I am proud of our San Antonio City Council on the passage of the nondiscrimination ordinance. Every person deserves the opportunity to live a life of dignity without fear. Our LGBT community and our proud veterans can rest assured that they are offered the same protections as in other Texas major cities. I hope one day that we can all celebrate the richness and diversity that spring from full acceptance and inclusion."
BACKGROUND: During the 83rd Legislative Session, Senator Van de Putte authored Senate Bill 237, which would have prohibited employment discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. The bill was left pending in committee and did not become law.
