Senator Van de Putte Criticizes Addition of Abortion to Special Session
(Austin) — Today, Governor Rick Perry added abortion issues to the call of the special session of the 83rd Texas Legislature. State Senator Leticia Van de Putte (D-San Antonio, District 26) issued the following statement in response:
"Prior to the 83rd Regular Legislative Session, Republicans were criticized for waging a War on Women. I was so pleased when they called a truce once the session started, reaching across party lines to pass bills that actually benefited women, such as Texas' version of the Lilly Ledbetter Act, promising equal pay for equal work, and restoring some of the devastating cuts to women's health care funding.
"Sadly, Governor Perry apparently wants something different for the Special Session. Today, he added abortion issues to the Special Session call, renewing the attack on women. If the Governor is going to keep legislators in Austin, let's make that time productive and work on issues that will take all Texans into the future, rather than pushing women's reproductive rights back to the past."
