Van de Putte on passage of Veteran Education Assistance Act

(Austin) — Senator Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, issues the following statement on the passage of SB 1158, regarding Hazlewood benefits:

Thanks to my colleagues for moving forward SB 1158, the Veteran Education Assistance Act. Experience has shown us that the best way to help veterans fully take advantage of the benefits and services they have earned is through veterans helping other veterans, and that includes education benefits. Transferring the administration of Hazlewood benefits from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to the Texas Veterans Commission and making veteran education counselors available to campuses will greatly facilitate these veteran-to-veteran interactions. These type of conversations have been proven to result in efficient ways to maximize the use of veteran federal benefits. I am hopeful the House of Representatives will affirm their support for Texas veterans and their families and pass SB 1158.
