Senator Van de Putte Elected President Pro Tempore

(Austin) — Yesterday, January 8, Senator Leticia Van de Putte (District 26, Bexar County) was elected to serve as President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate by her colleagues. In a nominating ceremony on the first day of the 83rd Legislature, Senator Van de Putte was praised for her hard work and service to community by fellow senators, including Sen. Judith Zaffirini of Laredo:

"Leticia was sensitized to inequality at a young age and now she fights for social justice every day," Zaffirini said.

"I am humbled by this honor, and by my colleagues' kind words," Van de Putte said. "I will work hard to deserve it."

In her acceptance speech, Sen. Van de Putte outlined her priorities to defend public education, veterans, and victims of human trafficking. She also noted the changing demographics of Texas, and urged Texans of different cultural backgrounds to unite in their efforts to keep Texas great - and most importantly, to invest in the education of Texas' growing population.

"If we do not, history will remember us harshly as the generation that squandered an opportunity to build something grand," Van de Putte said.
