Senator Van de Putte Files Resolution to Pay Tribute to Iwo Jima Veterans

(AUSTIN, TX) -- On Monday, February 19, Senator Leticia Van de Putte will be recognized on Senate Resolution 263, which pays tribute to the Texas veterans who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during the Pacific campaign of World War II.

February 19 marks the 62 year anniversary of the pivotal battle in our nation's history, which is famous for the image of the U.S. troops raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi. The capture of Iwo Jima was considered necessary to the United States, because the island provided a staging area for the invasion of the Japanese homeland. The Battle of Iwo Jima began February 19, 1945 and lasted approximately 35 days.

Senator Van de Putte will recognize survivors of Iwo Jima for their extraordinary valor and service to our nation. Four Texas Iwo Jima veterans, representing all Iwo Jima veterans, will be personally introduced and honored in the Senate Chamber.

The Senate convenes at 1:30 p.m. on Monday and the resolution will be read shortly thereafter. Press is welcome.

Senator Van de Putte (D-San Antonio) serves as Chair of the Senate Veteran Affairs and Military Installations Committee.
