E-News from the Office of Senator Van de Putte

Dear Friend,

As you know the mulch fire in Helotes continues to burn and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) has now encountered further complications. The operation has again been halted, as the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) announced it would not continue to supply water to fight the fire, due to concerns of polluting the Edwards Aquifer.

The SAWS board voted to allow their attorneys to seek an injunction against TCEQ, should they resume efforts to fight the fire. This decision was made, as SAWS sincerely believes further efforts will affect the water quality. In addition to the water quality concerns, however, many have serious concerns on air quality.

Because of this increasingly serious situation, Senator Uresti, Representative Leibowitz and I requested a meeting with Glen Shankle, Executive Director of TCEQ, and his staff members who are leading the efforts to fight the fire. We also requested City of San Antonio officials, along with emergency response personnel, San Antonio Water System officials and Edward's Aquifer Authority officials be present. Environmental experts and contractors were also on-hand in order to weigh all options.

It is my hope that putting all of the stakeholders together will help us arrive at a more viable and immediate solution to remedy this situation. Should any major changes occur, I will continue to keep you informed.
