Senator Carlos Uresti: Pause a Moment to Remember Our Fallen
"Memorial Day is a day to remember and reflect on the importance of those who have died in service of our nation. As a Marine, the son of a veteran, and the father of a Marine--this day holds a special place in my heart.
"We often take for granted the freedom we have to make choices. We are free to speak out, free to think and worship as we please. We have that liberty because of the men and women who paid the ultimate price by giving their lives on battlefields around the world throughout our proud history.
"Over the years, Texas has produced more than its share of soldiers--Marines, seaman, airmen and guardsmen. But regardless of the branch in which they serve, these men and women can be described by one word… heroes" Said Uresti.
In March, the newest monument on the Capitol grounds was unveiled. The monument on the northeast side of the grounds honors those veterans who served in the Vietnam War.
"I encourage you to admire this great treasure next time you visit our Capitol" Said Uresti. The legislation establishing the monument was passed in 2005, and after years of planning and development, the monument was dedicated in front of approximately 5,000 visitors in 2014.
"As an American, I have a great appreciation for the military men and women who have suffered and died for our nation. This Memorial Day, I encourage you to attend some of the many events going on around our state" Said Uresti.
Sen. Uresti represents Senate District 19, which covers more than 35,000 square miles and contains all or part of 17 counties, two international ports of entry, ten state parks, 61 school districts, 2700 miles of highways, and more than 23,000 producing oil and gas wells. The district is larger than 12 states and 82 Nations, and contains over half of the Texas-Mexico border.
