Uresti Urges Grieving San Antonio Community to Come Together Over Baby Scotty's Death

SAN ANTONIO -- Tonight there will be a vigil for baby Scotty. All of the child's family and friends are in my prayers. My heart goes out to them. This tragic incident will not be forgotten. We must all come together as a community and provide strength to the family and for the other little ones that are still with us.

We must all take care to be aware of the signs and signals of post partum depression. Post partum psychosis is very rare and very serious. I will be looking into possible child safety measures, and I encourage all my colleagues to do so before the next legislative session. I will continue my efforts with members of the Bexar County Blue Ribbon Task Force to combat child endangerment and work toward the prevention of any child deaths. Any child endangerment is unacceptable.

Although I sponsored successful legislation in 2003 - HB 341 - that requires hospitals to provide a resource list parents may contact for counseling on post partum illnesses, it still takes all of us in the community -- friends, neighbors, everyone -- to reach out and notice when someone is afflicted.

We strive to prevent any child deaths, and we will look to eliminate all risks to our beloved children. This tragedy that has befallen our community is not taken lightly.
