Ellis Praises Obama Gun Safety Plan
Universal background checks, ban on high capacity ammunition clips, better reporting key provisions of plan
(Austin, Texas)—Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) today released the following statement on the gun safety initiatives announced today by the Obama Administration.
"President Obama has put forward a common sense plan to increase gun safety in the United States. How many more tragedies must we endure before we step up and take action?
"Universal background checks for any gun purchase, reinstating the assault weapon ban, and banning high capacity ammunition clips are simple, safe and responsible reforms that will make our communities safer. These initiatives are not just the right thing to do, but are supported by the vast majority of Americans, including gun owners and members of the National Rifle Association.
"I also applaud his plan to issue an executive order requiring the Center for Disease Control to study the impact of guns and gun violence on public health. For too long science has been bullied into silence on this issue.
"I plan on filing legislation to close the gun show loophole in Texas, which will help ensure those who cannot pass a background check at a gun store will not be able to go to a flea market and buy one there, no questions asked. I am also exploring other common sense solutions to keep guns out of the hands of those who should not have them, help law enforcement track gun crime and increase oversight of those allowed to sell firearms in Texas. We can ensure public safety while preserving the individual right to bear arms is protected."
