SENATOR NELSON RECEIVES LONE STAR AWARD

AUSTIN — Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, has received the Association of Substance Abuse Program's 2013 Lone Star Award in recognition of her leadership and contributions to substance use disorder prevention, treatment and recovery services.

"Senator Nelson has served tirelessly on behalf of the health, safety and well being of Texans. Over a long and distinguished career in the Texas Senate, Senator Nelson has promoted policies that discourage drug abuse and encourage individuals into treatment," said Cynthia Humphrey, the Association's Executive Director. "Because of the vision and dedication provided by leaders like Senator Nelson, progress is being made to alleviate the harm caused by addiction."

Senator Nelson was nominated for the award by member organizations in Senate District 12, including the Tarrant County MHMR Center and the Tarrant County Challenge and Recovery Resource Council. During the recently concluded session, Senator Nelson led the Article II budget workgroup which appropriated more than $25 million for substance abuse prevention and treatment. She also authored SB 58, which creates a public reporting system of substance abuse outcomes and created a $25 million grant program for community collaborative projects that bring public and private entities together to serve individuals who are experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse problems.

"I would like to thank the Association not only for this recognition, but also for their hard work on behalf of Texans who battle with substance abuse and addiction," said Senator Nelson. "Substance abuse unfortunately continues to have a destructive impact on the lives of Texans from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds, and it is important that we work to help these individuals overcome their addictions."

For her work during the 83rd Legislature, Senator Nelson has received several awards, including the 2013 Women's Health Hero Award from the Texas Women's Health Coalition; the Texas Champion for Children Award from Texas CASA; the Physicians Patient Advocacy Award from Texas Academy of Family Physicians; Senate Legislator of the Year from Texas Nurse Practitioners; and the Courageous Defender of Life Award from Texas Alliance for Life.

SENATOR JANE NELSON represents District 12, including portions of Tarrant and Denton Counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health & Human Services.
