Senator Garcia Saddened by Republican Disregard for Women's Health

Senator Garcia was saddened today at the Republican attacks on women and families during the floor debate on SB 5, an omnibus bill restricting a woman's right to reproductive care. Legislation sponsored by Senator Hegar will now directly contradict federal law and reduce women's access to healthcare in Texas.

"I offered an amendment today that would ensure that the focus of our efforts was truly about providing healthcare access to all citizens in Texas, especially women. Instead, my Republican colleagues decided to dismiss the need to protect a woman's health during such a significant decision for political posturing by making it even more difficult for women and families to get medical help in their time of need." Stated Garcia. "I'm disappointed that women's rights have taken a step backwards at a time when there are more women in the Senate than ever before."

"Additionally, the obstacles placed on a woman's constitutional right to reproductive health will lead us down the path to costly litigation. Ultimately, the Court's will decide if our actions today will stand constitutional challenges."

The bill unnecessarily increased the standards of facilities that offer abortions to match those of ambulatory service centers; demanded that physicians have admitting privileges at hospitals they provide these services at; and changed the restrictions on pharmaceutically induced abortions to contradict FDA evidence based protocols. Garcia vowed to do everything she could to fight the bill as it continues through the legislative process.
