Senator Seliger and Representative Swinford Secure TxDOT Funding for Stratford Main Street Program
AUSTIN, Texas — The Texas Transportation Commission (Commission) unanimously voted yesterday to recommend $1.9 million in funding for the Stratford Main Street Program, as part of a group of recommended transportation enhancement projects funded by the recently enacted American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). This funding request was recommended at the strong urging of State Senator Kel Seliger and State Representative David Swinford. "The people of Stratford have committed themselves financially to this project over the past six years, and this award is a direct reflection of their dedication to their community," said Seliger.
Since the Main Street project was awarded to the City of Stratford in 2002, the city has made a substantial financial commitment to revitalizing and updating their main street area. This project is intended to address the many safety issues associated with the deteriorating sidewalks, poor lighting and inadequate drainage.
Both Swinford and Seliger joined Stratford City Manager Duane Mungia at the Commission meeting to show their support for this project. "Working with a community where the residents work so hard is always a real pleasure," said Swinford.
In addition to the ARRA funds awarded for Stratford, a companion project for improvements to US 287 totaling $3.8 million received a federal earmark and will be constructed in conjunction with the Stratford Main Street Program.
Due to previous rescissions and a shift of Texas Department Of Transportation (TxDOT) priorities, many transportation enhancement projects had been left without financial commitment from TxDOT. The ARRA provided $2.2 billion to the state of Texas for transportation-related infrastructure improvements. Of this amount, Texas was required to set aside $67 million specifically for enhancements.
Kel Seliger was recently reelected on November 4, 2008 to serve the citizens of the Panhandle and the Permian Basin in the Texas Senate. David Swinford has served the citizens of District 87 in the Texas House since 1991, which includes Sherman, Moore, Potter and Carson Counties.
