Statement by State Senator Craig Estes on U.S. Supreme Court ruling that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to keep and bear arms
Austin - State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) released the following statement on the ruling issued today by the United States Supreme Court affirming an individual right to keep and bear arms.
"Like most gun owners, I have long believed that I held an individual right to keep and bear arms for the defense of my home and family, or the lawful exercise of hunting or other shooting sports. This decision by the United States Supreme Court affirms that we Americans have an individual right to gun ownership and that right cannot be removed by the federal, state, or local government.
"While the Supreme Court upheld our individual right to own guns, the Court did affirm that government can still regulate or limit the use of firearms. As a strong supporter of our state's concealed handgun law, the expansion of the Castle Doctrine, and an avid outdoorsman, I will continue to oppose any state regulation on firearms that is inconsistent with our traditional ownership and use of firearms."
