Texas Senate passes two-year moratorium on Trans-Texas Corridor

AUSTIN -- State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) voted in favor of Senate Bill 1267 to put a two-year moratorium on most privately funded toll roads, including the proposed Trans-Texas Corridor.

"This two-year moratorium will give the legislature the opportunity to review provisions in these long-term contracts, and seek more public input on the best course for our state's transportation policy," said Estes.

Senate Bill 1267 imposes a two-year moratorium on most privately funded toll road projects by barring any new comprehensive development agreements or toll-project sales to a private entity, and requiring a study committee to examine the impact of these projects.

"A two-year delay on a 50-year contract is a reasonable step in making sure we get these transportation projects right with full accountability," added Estes. "A 50-year contract is like a ship at sea, if it is off course just a couple degrees it can miss it's destination by a continent."

Senate Bill 1267 will now go the Texas House for consideration.
