Senator Craig Estes Appointed to Sunset Advisory Commission

AUSTIN -- State Senator Craig Estes (R-Wichita Falls) has been appointed to the Sunset Advisory Commission which regularly reviews state agencies to assess their need to exist.

The appointment was announced by Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst.

“I am extremely pleased with this appointment and welcome the opportunity to be involved in this crucial function of state government,” Estes said.

The sunset process is guided by a 12-member body of legislators and public members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House. The commission is assisted by a staff whose reports provide an assessment of an agency’s programs, giving the Legislature the information needed to draw conclusions about the agencies under review.

Agencies typically are reviewed every 12 years, and about two dozen agencies undergo the sunset process each legislative session. Agencies up for review in 2006-07 include the Texas Historical Commission, Texas Education Agency, Texas Animal Health Commission, Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, Office of Rural Community Affairs and Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Other members of the Texas Senate serving with Estes are Kim Brimer of Fort Worth, Robert Deuell of Greenville, Eliot Shapleigh of El Paso, John Whitmire of Houston and Dewhurst. Howard Wolf of Austin is the Senate’s member representing the general public.

Members of the Texas House serving on the panel are Vicki Truitt of Keller, Byron Cook of Corsicana, Glenn Hegar of Katy, Carl Isett of Lubbock, Ruth McClendon of San Antonio and Speaker Tom Craddick.
