Nichols welcomes Athens residents to the Texas Capitol
Austin — Today, state Senator Robert Nichols (R-Jacksonville) welcomed residents from Athens for Athens Legislative Day at the Texas Capitol.
"It's always a thrill to have folks from Athens come to Austin," said Nichols. "Not only do residents get a chance to learn about the Legislature, but it gives us the chance to hear directly from constituents about the issues they are concerned about."
The group of about 57 people traveled to Austin yesterday for a full day of activities.
Following recognition on both the Senate and House chambers, the group will hear from Rep. Betty Brown (R-Kaufman) and Nichols during lunch.
"This lunch will give me a chance to visit with the group, update them on the session, and hear any questions or concerns."
In addition to hearing from their legislators, members of the group will also hear from members of state agencies, including Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples. Before his election to state-wide office, Staples represented Athens in the Texas Senate.
Another former Athens representative, Clyde Alexander, will address the group. Alexander is the chief of staff for new Speaker of the House Joe Straus.
