Rodríguez statement on Justice Department decision to address Texas voter suppression
Austin, Aug. 22 — Senator José Rodríguez issued the following statement in response to the Justice Department announcement that it will seek to intervene in a lawsuit over Texas' redistricting laws and that it will sue the state over the voter ID law:
Texas' long history of voting rights violations, including the 2011 Republican redistricting maps which federal courts found intentionally discriminatory, warrant further scrutiny of the Voter ID law. That law clearly is an effort to suppress voting rights in Texas.
Jose Rodriguez represents Texas Senate District 29, which includes the counties of El Paso, Hudspeth, Culberson, Jeff Davis and Presidio. He represents both urban and rural, and more than 350 miles of Texas-Mexico border. Senator Rodriguez was elected in 2010; he is Vice Chairman of the Jurisprudence Committee and is a member of the Criminal Justice, Veterans Affairs and Military Installations, and Government Organization committees.
